We are cycling from the Challenge Central HQ here in Letchworth to Amsterdam!

After receiving a huge number of comments about cycling in London and battling through the mornign traffic 'isn't everyone's cup of tea', we looked at the route and created a much easier journey, that gets us in the countryside inside 10 minutes.

Not only is this a huge advantage, the mileage of Day 1 isn't effected at all - it's the same distance, just a much easier start.   After amazing feedback from our cyclists last year, who trialled it, it's now part of the calendar.    Not only is the avoidance of umpteen Boris Buses, a huge number of traffic lights, roundabouts and constant 'stop-starting' resulting in literally 100's of times, 'clicking in and out' of the pedals, we also provide free parking here at CC HQ.   We're a mile from Letchworth Train Station which is on the mainline to St Pancras and we also have a number of hotels literally on our doorstep!  So for those of you who fancy an easier opening few hours of a challenge where you get 'straight into the cycling', then this is the one for you.

It also makes it a lot easier to collect your bike, as many of you will already have your car here!

Curious?   Then give it a try - it really is a much easier way to start a challenge!   And cups of tea, an area to change and accessible toilets make it for many, the perfect way to start a 3-day cycle!

Day 1 - Letchworth to Harwich – 83 miles

Your Letchworth to Amsterdam adventure begins at Challenge Central HQ - Business Centre West, SG6 2HB.  W3W///Roses.Elbow.Belong.   Meet the team and your fellow cyclists at 8.30, where you'll be fed and watered and also have the option for a quick change and a cuppa and the added bonus of ample free parking.   We're also directly opposite a Travelodge, for those requiring accommodation, a Costa, a McDonalds and a Supermarket!  At 9:15am the challenge begins!!

The added advantage of leaving from Hertfordshire instead of London, means we are in the countryside within the first 10 minutes, avoiding all the roundabouts, traffic lights, Boris Buses and all-around congestion that our capital has!  With beautiful coffee stops in villages and lunches on quintessentially English Greens, you'll be well looked after all the way.

Our day concludes at the port in Harwich, where we board an overnight ferry to Holland. Relax and recharge in style with access to restaurants, bars, a cinema, and free Wi-Fi onboard. Your cabin includes en-suite showers, towels, and bedding for a comfortable night’s sleep. (Single occupancy upgrades are available for an additional fee, subject to availability.)

Essentials for Your Ride

Ensure you have the following core items to make your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible:

>> Road Bike or Hybrid Bike – A well-maintained bike suited for long-distance riding is essential. Ensure it's recently serviced to avoid any mechanical issues on the road.

>> Helmet – Mandatory for safety. No helmet, no ride.

>> Cycling Clothing – Comfortable and weather-appropriate cycling clothes, including:

- Padded Cycling Shorts – Essential for comfort on long rides.

- Cycling Jersey – Lightweight, breathable, and ideally moisture-wicking.

- Waterproof Jacket – A lightweight, packable jacket to stay dry in case of rain.

Additional Gear

These items are recommended to enhance your safety and comfort:

>> Cycling Shoes and Pedals – If you’re used to clip-in pedals, bring cycling shoes that fit your setup.

>> Sunglasses – Protect your eyes from sun, wind, and debris.

>> Gloves – Cycling gloves with padding can reduce hand fatigue.

>> Hydration System – Bring a water bottle or hydration pack to stay hydrated on the go.

Safety and Navigation

While the Challenge Central team provides support, having some essentials can make you feel more prepared:

>> Bike Lights – Front and rear lights for safety, especially for any early or late riding.

>> Mini Pump and Spare Tubes – In case of punctures, a pump and spare inner tubes are vital.

>> Multi-Tool – A small multi-tool for quick adjustments on the road.

>> Phone and Charger – Keep your phone handy for navigation and emergencies. A portable charger is also useful.

Personal Items

>> Passport – Required for the ferry and entry into the Netherlands.

>> Cash/Card – For any incidental expenses, including meals not covered in the package.

>> Toiletries – Basic items for freshening up during overnight stops.

Optional Comfort Items

For those who like to be extra prepared, consider these optional items:

>> Energy Snacks/Gels – While refreshments are provided, you may prefer your own favorite energy bars or gels.

>> Small Backpack – Useful for carrying extra layers or personal items.

>> Earplugs and Sleep Mask – If you’re a light sleeper, these can be helpful on the ferry and in shared accommodations.

Packing Tips:

>> Pack Lightly – The support vehicle will carry your belongings, but it’s best to keep it minimal.

>> Check the Weather – European weather can be unpredictable; be prepared for all conditions.

>> Label Your Gear – Labeling your items ensures nothing is misplaced, especially if you’re in a group.
